Nicolas Royer-Artuso is a composer, musician (oud, violin, electronics, and fretless guitar), linguist, musicologist, writer, music teacher, performance artist, and practitioner of the Theater of the Oppressed based in Montreal, Canada. His work has been presented in Armenia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, England, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Lebanon, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey, and the United States. He has published and lectured on: 1) phonology, morphology, and their interface; and on languages in contact; 2) maqam music; 3) performance; and 4) textsetting. After studying Western classical music, jazz, and electroacoustic composition, he quickly devoted himself to maqam music. He is also a skilled free improviser and has performed with numerous musicians. He was a founding member of nü.kolektif (Istanbul, 2008–2014) as a composer, co-director, musician, and actor within the Istanbul-based political theater/performance collective. In 2016, together with Ülfet Sevdi, he co-founded Thought Experiment Productions (Montreal), a multidisciplinary production company dedicated to producing politically themed performances using social science research as a methodological framework.
